Shelter Building

On a beautiful spring-like day it seemed appropriate for the Year 1 and 2 children to try and build some shelters. They were told that the shelters needed to be strong enough that, if necessary, they could sleep in them. They were also told to concentrate on the roof. It was really interesting watching them work in groups – some developed a real team, some just wanted to do their own thing and some strayed right off the task. It was also interesting to see where their priorities lay – many concentrated on the finishing touches, like seating, before they had built a structure. They also seemed to be drawn to man made objects rather than natural materials. It is probably a good thing no one has to sleep in their shelter tonight!
