At Lockers Park, we believe that being a Global Citizen begins with understanding that even small actions can make a meaningful difference to the lives of others. Over the past year, our school community has been proud to support Barakah Kunda School in The Gambia, helping a new school turn an ambitious vision into a reality.
Throughout the year, Lockers Park boys, families and staff have supported a wide range of charitable initiatives. In September, donations collected for Barakah Kunda School formed part of our commitment to helping communities both close to home and further afield.
That support has contributed to an important first chapter for Barakah Kunda School. The school has now successfully enrolled 150 students across Years 7 and 8, giving young people access to education and opportunities that have the potential to transform their futures.
The project is continuing to grow, with exciting progress also being made towards the development of a purpose-built school campus. This will allow Barakah Kunda School to welcome even more pupils in the years ahead.
In a recent message to supporters, Barakah Kunda School described the donations and sponsorship received during its first year as being “instrumental in helping us turn a vision into reality.”
For the boys at Lockers Park, supporting projects such as Barakah Kunda is an important part of learning what it means to be a Global Citizen. It helps them to look beyond their own experiences, develop an understanding of the wider world and recognise the difference that generosity, collaboration and collective action can make.
Charitable giving is woven throughout life at Lockers Park. During the year, our boys and families have supported local, national and international causes through activities and collections, encouraging pupils not simply to raise money or donate items, but to understand why they are helping and who their support will benefit.
The relationship with Barakah Kunda School provides a particularly powerful opportunity for our boys to see that impact.
Lockers Park has been recognised as one of the school’s valued founding supporters and has been invited to the inaugural BKS Legacy Gala in London in November, an event that will celebrate what has already been achieved and share plans for the school’s future.
The invitation also extends much further afield, with supporters encouraged to visit Barakah Kunda School in The Gambia to meet its pupils and families and see first-hand the difference their contributions are making.
As Barakah Kunda School continues to grow, we look forward to following the progress of its pupils and school community. Most importantly, we hope our boys will see that their actions here in Hertfordshire can have an impact thousands of miles away.
It is a wonderful example of what Global Citizenship means at Lockers Park: looking beyond ourselves, understanding our place in the wider world and recognising that together, we can make a difference.
