From the Headmaster’s Desk: An Extraordinary Mathematical Achievement

There are some achievements that deserve us to stop for a moment and appreciate quite how remarkable they are. Sebastian’s recent success in the UK Mathematics Trust Junior Mathematical Olympiad is certainly one of them.

Sebastian achieved an extraordinary 59 marks out of a possible 60, earning both a Gold Medal and a book prize. This exceptional result placed him among the top four mathematicians nationally who took part in the competition. We have subsequently learned that Sebastian also achieved the highest score in the East of England.

For a boy of his age, this is a truly outstanding academic achievement and one of which the whole Lockers Park community is immensely proud.

The Junior Mathematical Olympiad is very different from a conventional school mathematics paper. Entry is by invitation following an outstanding performance in the UKMT Junior Mathematical Challenge. Those selected are then asked to tackle six demanding problems over two hours.

Success requires far more than reaching the correct answers. Competitors must construct rigorous, carefully reasoned written solutions, explaining and proving how they reached their conclusions. The Olympiad demands intellectual curiosity, resilience, clarity of thought and the confidence to persevere when an answer is not immediately apparent.

These are precisely the qualities we seek to develop in every boy at Lockers Park.

Sebastian undoubtedly possesses exceptional mathematical ability, but talent also needs opportunity if it is to flourish. One of our most important responsibilities as a school is to recognise where a boy has the potential to go further and then provide the challenge, encouragement and opportunities that will allow him to do so.

At Lockers Park, academic excellence is not about placing a ceiling on what a boy should know at a particular age. It is about knowing each boy well enough to recognise when he is ready to be stretched beyond it.

We have seen this intellectual ambition from Sebastian before. Last year, while in Year 7, he was part of the Lockers Park team that won the Stowe School da Vinci Decathlon. This academically demanding competition brings together disciplines including mathematics, science, engineering, code breaking, English, art and poetry.

His latest achievement demonstrates what can happen when natural ability is combined with hard work, excellent teaching and the freedom to pursue a subject at greater depth.

There was also something particularly valuable about celebrating Sebastian’s achievement in front of the younger boys during assembly. Excellence should inspire. It shows boys that being inquisitive is something to be proud of, that difficult problems are worth wrestling with and that there is real satisfaction to be found in discovering just how far their abilities can take them.

Not every boy will become one of the country’s leading young mathematicians, nor should that be our only measure of success. Our responsibility is to discover what excites each individual boy and then give him the confidence and opportunity to pursue it.

For Sebastian, mathematics is clearly an area in which he has an extraordinary capacity to excel. Achieving 59 out of 60 in a national Olympiad, placing among the top four nationally and recording the highest score in the East of England is quite remarkable.

Sebastian, congratulations. We are enormously proud of you and very excited to see where your curiosity takes you next.
