Our approach to Special Educational Needs (SEN) is rooted in the belief that one size does not fit all. We value every boy as an individual and recognise that pupils learn in different ways and may require varying levels of support to help them thrive. Instead, we create a learning environment where all pupils feel confident, included and able to reach their full potential.
Parents are our partners. We maintain open, honest communication and encourage families to be fully involved in their son’s support plan. Regular reviews, progress updates and shared goal-setting ensure that home and school are working together effectively.
An Inclusive School
Our inclusive ethos ensures that the learning, behavioural and emotional needs of each child are identified early, regularly assessed and thoughtfully supported. We work in partnership with parents, teachers and external professionals to ensure every pupil receives the most appropriate and effective help.
At the heart of our school is a dedicated Learning Enrichment Area, designed to be an inviting, accessible space where boys can receive tailored support in a calm and encouraging setting.
Identifying and Understanding SEN
We follow the guidance set out in the SEND Code of Practice (2015) and use a graduated approach to support. Identification begins early with:
- Admissions Assessments: Provide an initial picture of each boy’s learning profile.
- Ongoing Classroom Observations: Help us notice emerging needs.
- Regular Review Meetings: Ensure that support remains appropriate and effective.
If our assessments indicate that a child may have additional needs – such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD, ASD traits, speech and language difficulties, or challenges with emotional regulation, we work closely with families to decide the best next steps.
Tailored SEN Support
We offer a range of targeted strategies and interventions, including:
- Specialist One-to-One Support: Individual sessions with trained specialist teachers help boys work on areas such as literacy, numeracy, memory, processing speed, organisation and study skills.
- Small Group Interventions: Where suitable, pupils join small groups focusing on phonics, spelling, comprehension, social skills or emotional literacy.
- In-Class Support: Our teachers adapt lessons to meet diverse learning needs through differentiated tasks, multisensory teaching and use of supportive technology.
- Personalised Learning Plans: Every pupil requiring additional SEN support has clear, measurable targets which are regularly reviewed with parents.
- Collaboration with Specialists: We maintain strong links with educational psychologists, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and other professionals who can provide further insight or intervention if needed.
Supporting Emotional Wellbeing and Behaviour
We understand that emotional or behavioural challenges can impact a child’s ability to learn. Our pastoral team provides:
- Mentoring and check-ins
- Social communication support
- Programmes to develop resilience, confidence and self-regulation
- Close communication with families
Our aim is to ensure each boy feels safe, listened to and understood.
A Community Where Every Voice Is Heard
All boys at our school are valued members of the community. Their strengths are celebrated, their challenges understood, and their contributions appreciated. Our inclusive approach ensures every child has the opportunity to flourish — academically, socially and emotionally.
